Around Thessaloniki (2): the waterfront

Thessaloniki is right on the Thermaic Gulf (Aegean Sea), and it is a major port for northern Greece and the Balkans more generally.

Via Egnatia runs parallel to the waterfront about five blocks to the north. Along the waterfront itself is Nikis St., which has cafes and bars with all kinds of outdoor seating on one side, and a walkway along the water's edge on the other.

At the eastern end of Nikis (where the shoreline turns south) is the 15th-century White Tower, originally a prison and site of many executions, now an art museum and tourist trap.

The White Tower, closer up.

Looking southeastward into the gulf.

Looking north from the waterfront at Aristotelou Square. Part of the Old City (up on the hill) is visible in the distance.

There was a race one afternoon.

Some of the port facilities, at the western end of Nikis.

Suddenly, the sun broke through the clouds, and the water turned a very interesting color. It doesn't look quite as striking in the photo, but still.

Yes, technically, a sailboat should have right-of-way over a tanker. But would you want to push your luck? (I guess they sail like they drive around there.)
