I stayed in the Hotel Acropol, which Lonely Planet/Greece 2002 called the best budget hotel in town. It was just off the Via Egnatia, and about a 25-minute walk to the university.

The bathroom was down the hall, but still, not bad at all for 18 euros a night (about $20 at current exchange rates).
