Lexical Categories in Linguistic Theory
Spring 2004


Student researchers who join the Lexical Categories research group will pursue an individual research project that explores differences among nouns, verbs, and/or adjectives in some area of linguistics (ideally, outside of synchronic adult syntax).


Sample ideas for research topics
A project could look at lexical category differences in...
  • amount or type of morphology available/required
  • L1 (or L2) acquisition
  • language impairment
  • word or sentence processing
  • historical change
  • pidgin & creole development
  • phonology
  • ...

The scope of a project could be...

  • a detailed investigation into one language
  • a comparison of a small number of languages
  • a cross-linguistic survey of a large number of languages
